Walmsley Retirement Community consists of 198 independent Living Units set in lush environs at the base of the Dandenong Ranges. Furlong Painting was engaged to renew the external painted surfaces to each unit which required various levels of repair and repainting. A carefully planned, strategic approach to works was necessary to ensure a quality finish and minimal inconvenience to residents.
As one resident so kindly reflected to management,
“The painters are helpful and very thoughtful…the men were so helpful to us. All the workmen we have had have been the same. It takes the stress from us old people.”
Footscray Aged Care is a 60 bed aged care facility serving as a home to a number of residents in the inner western suburb of Melbourne.
The internal paint finishes were showing significant wear and colour schemes lacking a desired warmth and welcome. The client chose a Furlong Painting long term paint maintenance strategy to initially update colour schemes followed by yearly paint maintenance to keep facilities looking clean and fresh.
The project required not only a professional understanding of paint coatings and application techniques but high levels of planning and liaison to be sensitive to the specific needs of the residents. Good housekeeping (tools and paint materials etc), compliant operatives (National Police Checks) and friendly dispositions were all necessary in the process.
Our client, Freemasons Homes for the Aged, recognized the internal and external breakdown of coatings at this residence and the impact this was having on the appeal of the facility.
Externally a once off rejuvenation project was undertaken to renew current paint finishes on previously painted surfaces and use specialist repair / coating techniques to previously rendered lower and upper wall areas. To ensure safe access to areas at height, appropriate elevated access equipment and roof harnessing was utilised.
Internally, a longer term paint maintenance process was devised and implemented. This included an initial repainting to previously painted surfaces to return them to a high standard of finish. At annual intervals a paint maintenance will be carried out to most worn areas to ensure the facility continues to project a fresh and clean environment, with all costs amortised across the life of the programme.
Making sure the facility continued to provide a safe and warm environment, the staging of these works was critical, as was the selection of appropriately skilled painters (in both painting skill and character).
A contemporary colour scheme was implemented with the result being a more modern and appealing residential facility.
